Book list

For September (Jane Redmont)

  1. Virgilio P. Elizondo and Timothy M. Matovina, San Fernando Cathedral: Soul of the City (Read the entire book) This book will provide a glimpse into Hispanic Spirituality and Expression
  2. Jane Redmont, When in Doubt, Sing: Prayer in Daily Life (Read Ch. 1, 2, 5, 6, 15, 16, 23, 24, 27)
  3. James Cone, The Spirituals and the Blues (Ch. 2, 3 and 4) These chapters will be scanned and sent to you. You do not NEED to purchase this book, but feel free if you are curious.
  4. Selected Readings from Life Together by Dietrich Bonhoeffer – Sent in a word document; check your email
  5. Also, please share the following links with folks. These are all links to YouTube. They include excellent renditions by Paul Robeson and Mahalia Jackson (among others) and will be good to accompany the readings from Cone’s book.  I recommend listening to them attentively, not while reading but before and/or after. They will provide an embodied musical companion to the book chapters.

The Spirituals saw a great revival during the Civil Rights Movement, sometimes with the old lyrics, sometimes with new lyrics. This famous freedom song (which you may also remember hearing in the movie “Selma”) appears to have been adapted from the Spiritual “I Ain’t Gonna Let Ol’ Satan Turn Me Round”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPuBGcng6Tw
