Anti-Racism Training & Retreat
Sunday, April 28 – Tuesday, April 30, 2019
$199

Racism dehumanizes us all — Dismantling racism heals us all.

Increase your understanding of the systemic violence that is racism in our society, our communities, and our churches by attending this workshop and retreat. As the church, it is our duty to not just be not racist, but to be anti-racist. This means we need to identify and work against racism. This workshop will help us to identify the insidious ways we perpetuate racism without even thinking about it. Whether this is your first step or a continuation of your journey, this workshop will meet you where you are to help you get closer to being an anti-racist, pro-reconciling leader for your church and community.

The training will be presented by Jessica Vazquez-Torres of Crossroads Anti-Racism Organizing and Training. Participating in anti-racism training is an important step in beginning to identify and dismantle systems of racism but is certainly difficult work. This event will include retreat time to decompress and process in the natural sanctuary of Moon Beach. Clergy, lay leaders and all UCC members and friends are encouraged to attend for personal enlightenment, for use in church leadership roles, and for possible future continuing education/ministerial requirements.* Resources will also be shared for participants to continue their own study and practice.

In addition to worship and time for reflection, the following topics will be addressed:
-Exploring US dominant culture and racism
-White Supremacy as the foundation of dominance
-Defining and understanding systemic racism
-Introducing and applying a power analysis to assess the church’s complicity in Systemic Racism
-Analyze the role individuals & institutions play in the perpetuation of systemic racism
-Becoming an antiracist multicultural church
-Strategies for the journey of transformation

* Multicultural awareness and anti-racism training are viewed as “best practices” in most professions, with many requiring it for credentialing. The United Church of Christ has identified anti-racism training as a “best practice” for its authorized ministers. All participants will receive a certificate of completion.

If a scholarship is needed, please contact Franz Rigert.
