Join us before the Annual Meeting officially begins for intensive, full-day workshop on Trauma Informed Care and Ministry.
Speaker: Dee Savides, Psychotherapist at Samaritan Counseling of the Fox Valley
Dee Savides is a Clinical Social worker with 30 years of experience as a psychotherapist. For the past 14 years she has worked with Samaritan Counseling Center of the Fox Valley; a faith-based agency that invites people of all faiths to integrate their sense of spirituality into their healing. Dee works with couples, individuals, and families on a variety of issues ranging from parenting, communication and anxiety management to more serious mental health concerns. Trauma healing and recovery is a central theme running through all her work and she is looking forward to exploring together how heightening our understanding of trauma can help us become better prepared for all forms of ministry. Dee is married to UCC Pastor Steve Savides, and as a ‘clergy spouse’ has been in and around church blessings and challenges for many years. She has served on the Northwest Association Ethics Committee in the past and has appeared in many theatrical productions performed at past annual meetings of the Wisconsin Conference.
The practices of “trauma informed care” have become the gold standard for those in caregiving fields. One study noted 50-60 % of Americans have experienced a traumatic event in their lifetimes (and 90% of those in behavioral health settings). As the church seeks to prepare us to ‘Be Love’ for all God’s children, it is now more than ever critical that we understand just how trauma is affecting our church leaders and members, and how to engage our faith communities for healing practices.
We do know that prioritizing physical, psychological and spiritual safety for those who have undergone trauma lays the groundwork for future healthy relationships, healing and recovery. This workshop will help to equip both leaders and parishioners with a basic understanding of the science of trauma, how it plays out in everyday interactions, and the phases of healing. Together workshop participants will explore strategies to bring increased trauma understanding to our various ministry communities. Topics will include:
