Friedens Community Ministries began as a pantry outreach of Friedens United Church of Christ at 13th & Juneau in 1978. Now it is a social service agency serving clients throughout Milwaukee County through a network of food pantries. Friedens offers opportunities to volunteer and donate.
The Guest House grew out of the desire of Milwaukee’s Central City Churches to have a community-based solution to the growing number of people experiencing homelessness in the inner city. In 1982 they secured a building owned by Friedens United Church of Christ at 1216 N. 13th St. Since then, The Guest House has transformed from an emergency shelter to offering on-site addiction and mental health counseling, permanent supportive housing, and Cream City Gardens, which provide guests with job training in agriculture and the green industry, while adding fresh produce to their volunteer meal program. The Guest House completed an 8,000 square foot expansion to its main building in 2016. The Guest House offers many ways to get involved and also accepts donations.
Founded in 1970, the Interfaith Conference of Greater Milwaukee is a non-profit organization through which the regional leaders and adherents of 17 member denominations and faiths dialogue to build relationships, conduct educational programs to foster public understanding and tolerance, and work together on social-justice issues to improve the quality of life for everyone. Several non-member faiths also participate in the planning and running of many of our events and activities.
The Conference’s underlying emphasis is “to uphold the dignity of every person and the solidarity of the human community.”
