The Prenzlau District of the Church of
Berlin-Bradenburg is an association of churches in what was the former German Democratic
Republic (East Germany). Since the "Wall" fell in 1989, the churches of
this District have been challenged to minister in a time of great change in a society that
had not welcomed religious life for 50 years.
The city of Prenzlau is north of Berlin and is near the Polish border. The church
district contains beautiful and ancient church buildings and small congregations.
The partnership is intended to share faith and build relationships. It is a place
for Wisconsin Christians to learn about a church in a "missionary" setting,
where it has to live out the call of the Gospel in a society where only a small percentage
of people claim the Christian faith or participate in the life of the church.
In 1996, the Northwest Association welcomed a group of 25 Prenzlau visitors, among them
many who never expected to ever visit the U.S. Later in 1996, a Wisconsin group
visited in Germany. In 1997, the Northwest Association hosted a youth delegation,
and in 1998, Wisconsin youth went to Germany. One exciting benefit of the
partnership is that several Prenzlau youth have served on the staff of the Wisconsin
Conference camp at Moon Beach.
