Sisters and Brothers in Christ:
What are we to do when social and political storm waves break across the bow of our church, threatening to swamp not only our peace and tranquility but also our vitality as a faith community?
Should we dive under the pews and hope the storm passes quickly by? Or, are we called to a different response? If the latter, how do we engage in dialogue with one another to discern the proper response without adding to the division and chaos that threatens to engulf us?
The 2018 Annual Meeting of the Wisconsin Conference of the United Church of Christ will seek to address these very questions. With the theme, “Why are we afraid?”, our guiding scripture is:
38But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, ‘Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?’ 39He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, ‘Peace! Be still!’ Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm. 40He said to them, ‘Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?’ 41And they were filled with great awe and said to one another, ‘Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?’ Mark 4: 38-41
It is my privilege to invite you to gather as the Wisconsin Conference at the Green Lake Conference Center on June 8—10, 2018. Our Keynote Speaker will be Rev. Traci Blackmon, who is the Executive Minister of Justice & Local Church Ministries for The United Church of Christ and Senior Pastor of Christ the King United Church of Christ in Florissant, Missouri. She will preach Friday night and deliver her keynote address on Saturday.
Read more about Rev. Blackmon and other special guests for our Annual Meeting in the Registration Booklet below. The Annual Meeting website (wcucc.org/annualmeeting) gives more information on the workshops and faith formation offerings, as well as the schedule for our plenary sessions and all other activities planned for the weekend.
Hope to see you on the beautiful shore of Green Lake in June!
